Commissioned by Collective, a contemporary arts complex based in and around the City Observatory in Edinburgh, this mapping project required my return to a site I first visited for the 2011 Sites of the Edinburgh Art Festival map, but – not in person. With timing and budget considerations making a site visit all but impossible, I had to rethink the touristic-heuristic methodology developed for past projects. I arrived instead at a kind of false memory map based on a comprehensive set of photos, drawings and anecdotes supplied by on-site gallery staff. I pored over the provided materials through most of August, and completed the resulting drawing in two weeks between 29 August and 11 September, 2023.
